Really? That's interesting that it should have that effect on you. I always imagined that it would contemplative, like gazing into the universe, clearing your mind of outside distractions. One of the lines in the play, interestingly, was that Rothko was afraid that 'one day the black would swallow the red'.

I visited the Rothko chapel in Houston, TX. It's a non-denominational chapel, octagonally shaped, with nothing except his huge black paintings that he made just before he committed suicide. It left me with a very strange feeling, as though it were a chapel to despair and hopelessness.
